BEER WE GO AGAIN! Fans flock t2010-Aug-19

Byline: Sam Dimmer

ENGLAND fans have learned from experience. There truly is only one way to watch us play in big competitions.

Not thousands of miles away dodging bullets and scraping Lion muck off your shoes. Not even at home with a takeaway curry and a chilled four pack.

Steel Rubber Bracelets

The savvy football fan heads straight to a pub - a place where England fans can arrive full of optimism and drown their sorrows as soon as it disappears.

So while some newspapers had staff out in Rustenburg we went one better - going to The Rocket, on Warwick Road, and Bostons on Far Gosford Street instead.

And fittingly the fans optimism was mirrored by the pub owners. Both have just re-opened in time for the World Cup and unlike starting James Milner on the left the gamble appears to have paid off.

Before kick off The Rocket's new landlord, Graham Amos, said: "There's a fair few in here. It's a good result for us already with the pub having just re-opened.

"I think England can get through to the second stage, we should do anyway. I remember us winning it in 1966."

And as the players warmed up optimism levels soared. Graham Pike said: "We'll win 2-0. Gerrard will score the first goal, we've all had a bet on it.

"If you look at our group we're hands down the best team, but I've no idea if we'll win the whole thing."

Paul Amos, strategically positioned in front of one of The Rocket's two big screens, said: "The USA aren't a bad side, this won't be a stroll in the park.

"I think we'll make the semi-finals though."

Lee Gough had his doubts about selection though. "Joe Hart should be in goal," he said. "He's been rock solid this season.

"And I think Joe Cole is the better option on the left. He's done it for England so many times before. James Milner hasn't."

Then we kicked off - and in minutes The Rocket was in raptures when Emile Heskey stayed on his feet long enough to feed England's captain, who slotted spectacularly.

Any hope of England running away with the game soon evaporated, but the beer was going down well.

Steel Gentle Necklaces Cheap

But the bitter soon tasted, well, bitter, after Rob Green kept English goalkeeping tradition alive with a howler to make David James proud.

The mood was sombre at the break. "I'm gutted," Ian Wilson said. "We've been giving them too much time on the ball and the goal came out of nothing.

Martin Pointer said: "We didn't play too badly. It was an uncharacteristic mistake from Rob Green.

"It happens every tournament though. It's gone from Calamity James to Calamity Green."

Hoping for a change of fortune The Telegraph opted for a half-time substitution, heading for Bostons, as they marked their opening night.

And while the barmaids may have kept some of the punters smiling the drab football meant that most could only afford a grimace, as England fluffed a hatful of chances and Wayne Rooney appeared to win his game of hide and seek.

Ironically, considering the Far Gosford Street venue, England had nothing up front and when the final whistle blew most fans took the

Been there, done that An old s2010-Aug-19

Sure, I know the difference between a pump and mule. Although I get a bit sheepish having to admit it, I was a shoe salesman in a former Pearl Jewelry life -- and a pretty good one.

Every once in a while I reflect back on my days as a "shoedog" and, except for horrific images of terminal bunions and freakish hammertoes, they're happy memories.

My former career has been an unexpected bonanza for my wife. Whenever she shops for work shoes, I usually insist that she buy pairs made of quality leather and offer to pay for the upgrade. If she's looking for workout shoes, I guide her past the cheap knockoffs to the more expensive Nikes or Adidas. Well-made shoes generally cost a few dollars more, but it pays to take care of your feet.

Recently, I dusted off my shoe-fitting skills to find a pair for my young grandson.

Noah will be a year old on April 1, and he's just on the verge of taking his first steps. His development has had its share of successes and failures, as evidenced by the multiple knots on his forehead and numerous facial contusions. But he's starting to pull himself up on any stable piece of furniture and circles the coffee table with ease. After doing a lap, he'll pull his hands away and stand by himself. Any day now, he'll take off on his own. Everyone agrees that the boy needs a good pair of shoes to start him off right.

As an old shoedog, I of course volunteered my services.

We set out one evening on our quest for shoes. We looked at plenty of Nike Shox Turbo and Adidas Hyper Run III's, which are miniature, multi-colored versions of adult shoes. And, they're pricey. A pair of Nike Kobe Zoom 5s runs about $90. Still, I was tempted. Noah would look pretty cool wearing them, and it would give him instant street cred with the day care and preschool gangs.

But I couldn't do Cheap Thai Silver Earrings it. While I'm sure Nike makes a great kids' shoe, I'm a traditionalist. I wanted my grandson to have a pair of those plain old white baby shoes, the kind you see hanging from a redneck's rearview mirror.

Desperate, I channeled my inner Al Bundy. I sold Stride Rite baby shoes many years ago, and I remembered measuring countless pairs of twitchy toddler feet. I recalled the feel of a shoe that fit just right, providing support yet allowing room to grow. I could tell when a baby's big toe fell into that sweet spot, about a thumbnail's length from the front edge. And, I learned to tie knots so secure that even Houdini couldn't kick off a pair if I'd worked my mojo.

Our shoe journey carried us all over town. We visited department stores, discount outlets and footwear boutiques. We saw shoes of every shape and color, shoes with cartoon characters, shoes with Velcro and even shoes with blinking lights. The selection was astounding, but I wanted my grandson to have solid footwear, not gimmicks.

We continued the search.

Finally, we hit the jackpot -- a pair of plain white leather baby shoes with flat soles and just enough ankle support. I measured Noah's feet and he came in just under a size four, although I rounded up because his feet are pretty thick. The best part might have the price, less than 20 bucks.

As I write this, Noah has yet to walk but he's close. I'm just hoping that when he does take his first step, Grandpa's superior shoe knowledge will get at least some of the credit.

Robert Rector Invasion of the 2010-Aug-15

When Richard Reid brought explosives onto an airliner in his shoes, authorities made millions of us remove our footwear for inspection before we boarded our flight.

Along the way, we were also required to carry our deodorant in a thimble and our toothpaste in an eye dropper.

Now comes Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab who smuggled explosives onto a flight in his underwear Stainless Steel Earrings and failed in an attempt to blow up the airplane near Detroit.

Should we now assume that all dignity will be abandoned in the name of security and we will be ordered to fling our undergarments onto the conveyor belt?

Probably not. But you can bet your briefs that we will soon be subjected to virtual strip searches when the government begins to use body scanners to foil terrorist attacks.

Those scanners are coming to an airport near you. Soon.

Should we be concerned? Is our privacy being violated?

The Transportation Security Agency assures us that passengers walk through the machines fully clothed; the resulting image appears on a monitor in a separate room and conceals passenger faces and sensitive areas.

One report says that the resulting images are scrubbed by an "algorithm" so they look like a "chalk etching" or a "fuzzy photo negative."

"It covers up the dirty bits," James Carafano, a homeland security expert at the conservative Heritage Foundation, told the Washington Post.

Wholesale Freshwater pearl bracelets

I doubt that these scanners will "cover up the dirty bits."

Why? Because, if they do, that's exactly where the terrorists will conceal their weapons.

Even potential death in a fiery explosion can't quiet privacy concerns, however. One young woman I know wonders how long it will be before the scanned images begin to show up on Facebook.

Others wonder how much cash a body scan of a celebrity will bring from the gossip mongers in what would be the ultimate paparazzi shot. Can you say six figures?

The alternative is a full body pat-down in front of an airport full of gawkers. Or perhaps we can run reluctant passengers past a pack of bomb-sniffing dogs.

Some suggest we employ the security measures used by the Israelis. In a country surrounded by enemies, no flight out of Tel Aviv has ever been hijacked.

Lisa Beyer, former Jerusalem bureau chief for Time magazine, wrote about the Israeli security drill: "They ask a lot of questions, don't hesitate to take their time doing it, aren't embarrassed about profiling fliers and are quick to take matters to a higher level of scrutiny. The point of the long question sessions is to find inconsistencies in a terrorist's cover story, or to agitate him into a panic.

"Almost always, I'd be questioned by one agent, who would then leave to consult with a second agent, who would appear and ask many of the same questions. Then the two would compare notes, often with a supervisor, before the first agent would return with more questions."

That sounds like a procedure that would add hours to the screening process. How much of this is the American public prepared to tolerate?

We had better be prepared to accept all of it.

We are at war. And w

Rodeo, Animals and Kite in coo2010-Aug-15

By PAT MUIR

YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

The Animals At Night and Brent Amaker and The Rodeo don't really play concerts so much as they instigate parties.

Graig Markel, the aural experimenter behind the former, just wants people to dance. Amaker, the leader of the latter, is known as the inventor of the whiskey baptism (more on that later). So the show they play Saturday with fellow Seattle band Head Like a Kite at the Yakima Sports Center is likely to be, um, colorful.

"There's not going to be any shoe-gazing going on, that's for sure," said Dan Craig, the Sports Center's booking agent and a collaborator with Markel on the occasional music project.

Brent Amaker and The Rodeo

On magazine didn't get a chance to interview Amaker earlier this year when he first brought his boys into town, but we described them at the time as sounding "sort of like Merle Haggard would if he was raised by Devo fans till age 8 and then left in the wilderness to fend for himself." We asked Amaker this week if he thought that was apt. He did.

It's an odd mix on its surface. But the way Amaker sees it, Williams and a guy like, say, Dee Dee Ramone are cut from similar cloth. They were both outlaws who lived fast and died young, unable to rein in their rebel spirits.

"Hank Williams was really one of the first punk rockers," Amaker said. "That kind of attitude is the same as old-time country; it's just a modern version."

If it seems at times that Amaker and his band are joking -- they wear matching black cowboy outfits and enter venues single file -- it's because they are. They celebrate the excesses of both country music and punk style with a humor that seems more like an homage than a lampoon. For instance, lyrics like "I'm the man who sings the songs you love/Like your favorite whiskey song/Or the one about the gun" from the song "I'm the Man" may seem like a parody of old country, but it's clearly a loving parody.

"It's just that I have a sense of humor," Amaker said. "If you look to old country music, there's a lot of humor in a lot of those songs."

The aforementioned whiskey baptism, too, is an example. The practice, which has become a staple of their live show, started innocently enough when fans began buying the band shots and delivering them to the stage midshow.

"Then they started bringing 10 or 15 shots, and we'd drink 'em," Amaker said. "And there was one show where we drank so much whiskey our drummer fell over."

As a solution, the band figured out it could get some audience participation if it poured the shot onto the head of the person who bought it. Whiskey baptism, see.

"We believe in putting on a show," Amaker said. "That's been lost a little bit in the past 10 or 20 years."

Cheap Steel Laser Rings The Animals At Night

Markel and his band likewise believe in putting on a show. Just like Head Like a Kite, this show's headliner, The Animals At Night incorporate all manner of sounds into their indie-electronic mix. And just like Head Like a Kite,

Centrica's profits near record1970-Jan-1

Byline: Adam Cash

SCOTTISH Gas owner Centrica is expected to report a rise to near-record profits at its residential business this week as households cranked up the heating to beat the December cold.

It became the first of the "big six" UK energy companies to lower gas Wedding dress prices recently with a 7 per cent cut for its eight million customers. But operating profits notched up by the residential arm are still expected to hit GBP 554m - up from GBP 379m in 2008.

While Scottish and British Gas will also have gained from last month's snow, which falls outside the period of the results, the figures for the group as a whole will show operating profits down 7 per cent to GBP 1.82bn in 2009.

Wholesale Hip Hop Watches

This is because lower wholesale gas prices have a bigger downward effect on production profits than the uplift given by the residential business.

Analysts suggest Scottish and British Gas could put further pressure on rivals later this year with more price cuts after securing the company's current position as the cheapest in the market.

Morgan Stanley's Bobby Chada said: "On our forecasts, even after the 7 per cent price cut, it will make a good margin in 2010, probably in excess of 7 per cent.

"Given the weak commodity price environment, Centrica will have scope for further tariff cuts later in the year and still meet consensus expectations."

Further price cuts will give its reputation a welcome boost, while other suppliers have less scope to cut due to bigger hedging positions built by buying gas far in advance when wholesale prices were much higher.

Chada added that Centrica would continue to benefit. "It puts pressure on rivals as it keeps Centrica as the cheapest supplier and should allow it to win back more market share."

CENTRICA updates shareholders 1970-Jan-1

CENTRICA updates shareholders on trading and, as households pay off pricey utility bills, the British Gas owner is likely to come under fire for expected big profits. Back in February Centrica said it had felt the impact of lower wholesale gas prices during last year, as its operating profit for the Charms year dipped 7% to Pounds 1.86 billion.

But the energy giant promised it would reduce the impact of fluctuating prices on its own share price by expanding into services such as installing smart metres, household wind Men Hip Hop Watches turbines and solar panels. Centrica has also started to spend more on upstream development, building on its Pounds 1.3 billion purchase of North Sea gas producer Venture Production last year.

Kat wants to be a devil woman!1970-Jan-1

That Katrina Kaif is producing her own film is known. But what the gorgeous actress is hiding is the fact that she wants to play a character that is not in keeping with the Ms Goody Two-Shoes type of roles that she has been offered by Bollywood all the while.

A wicked, scheming monster of a woman is what Katrina has in mind. And, not strangely, Katrina's role model for this kind of role is the celebrated Hollywood actress Meryl Streep's mean character Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada.

Katrina, who is adapting a French film in her debut as producer, has been carefully studying Meryl's mean machinations in her own effort to play a meanie on screen. "I have to be a really selfish, scheming woman who stops at nothing to achieve her ambitions... and yet stay connected to the audience. And, boy, does this character enjoy creating scenes! I don't want to copy the actress in the original film. This would be my take on a character I like because she's just the opposite of who and what I am. I don't like such characters in real life, honestly," revealed Kat.

Meryl Streep apart, Katrina is also looking at Kim Novak in Human Bondage, Glen Close in 101 Dalmations, Faye Dunaway in Dunston Checks In, all fine examples of Hollywood actresses playing wicked women, and some desi versions from Bollywood like Bindu in Do Raaste as well. To play a grey almost-negative character, the actress believes will be the biggest challenge of her career so far. Which is true, because being mean doesn't come easily to Katrina, and close friends laugh at her Ha ndle inability to lose her temper or be rude to people who upset her.

"I am not confrontational by nature. This character I've to play is aggressive to the point of being alien to me. I would rather walk away from ugly situations than let my private space be crowded with chaos and negativity. And that's a problem," said the actress. After this, still thinking on grey lines, Katrina is looking at producing a film where she can discard her good looks and be unattractive if not downright disfigured like Charlize Theron in Monster.

But for the moment, Katrina is just too into playing a woman who has men dancing around her little finger for as long as she doesn't tire Miu Miu of them. Then she moves on. Her co-star and buddy Ranbir Kapoor, who has a role in Katrina's debut as producer, wittily remarked that she needn't look at Hollywood for inspiration to play such roles. There are plenty of vicious real-life examples in Bollywood itself!

Journeying through the Black A1970-Jan-1

JAZZ music tapped its way over on beige leather shoes to the reedy tone of the saxophone and the tarry scent of half-smoked cigarettes.

The Blues came more quietly, a melancholy wisdom in its voice.

But black art was the subtlest of all, moving across the Atlantic by stealth, leaving traces of itself in the crude simplicity of a Picasso.

Traditionally hidden from art history but very much in view in 20th century contemporary art, the impact of black cultures from around the Atlantic is the focus of Tate Liverpool's new exhibition - Afro Modern: Journeys Through the Black Atlantic.

Fashion Fashion Waist Belts

"We all know about the influence of black culture on music, like jazz. blues, hip-hip, and so on, but we know much less about the impact on 20th century visual art," says the show's co-curator Peter Gorschlueter, the gallery's head of exhibitions.

"This is the first exhibition really to trace in depth the impact of black culture from around the Atlantic on modern and contemporary art."

The title comes from sociology professor Paul Gilroy's influential book, The Black Atlantic: Modernity and Double Consciousness, which described the fusion of black cultures with others around the Atlantic.

Displayed chronologically, the show begins by examining the cross- polination between early 20th century avant garde movements in art and African-American, Caribbean and Latin American painters and sculptors.

Picasso's oil on canvas Bust of a Woman (1909) is included in this section, angular shapes depicted in earthy tones a precursor to his well known Cubist style.

Also featured is US artist Man Ray's captivating Noir et Blanche (1926) - the head of an androgenous white woman beside an ebony mask. In colour they are a direct contrast, but there are physical similarities in the curve of their jawlines and pursed lips.

"Often the influence of black culture is just looked at in terms of Primitivism in the work of people like Picasso, Leger and others of the Paris Avant Garde being inspired by traditional African crafts but we are doing something really different," says Gorschlueter.

"We're looking at what happened at the same time at different parts around the Atlantic."

Also key to the subject is that, while the Black Atlantic influenced Western Europe, the exchange of ideas went both ways.

"There were artists from Brazil such as Tarsila do Amaral who came to Paris to study Stainless Steel Pendants with Leger and then went back to Brazil almost exporting what she had learned and influencing other artists there," explains Gorschlueter.

"And Wifredo Lam, a student of Picasso, had to go back to his home in Cuba when the war started in the 30s.

"Again he brought his experience of modern art in the 20th century back to his home country and fused it with traditional Caribbean culture."

This was not just happening in the salons of Europe, he continues.

"In the 1920s, Paris was a hub for all kinds of culture and there was almost a similar movement happening in New York at the same time, called the Harlem Renaissance, when people from black descent claimed their own culture and actually celebrated it.

"Then there were artists who were actuall

Chelsea challenge1970-Jan-1

As you make your sandwiches and get out your comfortable shoes ready for a day at the Royal Horticultural Society's Chelsea Flower Show next week (24-29 May), do spare a thought for the 600 exhibitors of show gardens, plants, floral arrangements, educational exhibits and sundries. Theirs is not an especially happy lot.

This year's cold and dry late-April and May with frosts at night have forced designers of show gardens to scrabble for substitute plants, while nurserymen, with exhibits in the Great Pavilion, have a more than usually worrying time getting the plants to the right stage for showing. Those who 'force' or hold back out-of-season plants always expect difficulties, but even the growers of Oriental poppies, bearded irises, peonies, lupins and other natural late-May flowers, will be experiencing problems.

These are challenges for this year's show, but things have generally got harder for exhibitors in recent years. They feel they must have a presence at Chelsea since it is the most famous and prestigious flower show in the world, yet it is ever more expensive to book a pitch there, put up staff in central London and negotiate traffic and congestion charge costs. Plant exhibitors Replica Hamilton cannot sell their goods off the stand as they can at other shows, yet visitors don't give them many orders any more. One nursery exhibitor told me, in a tone of justifiable exasperation, that people simply take digital photographs of the stand's flowers and name labels and then order the plants from the cheapest nursery website on the internet. The exhibitors must obey the ever more rigorous demands of the RHS show rules.

And, since 2005, the show has been longer by a day, which increases the costs of manning the stand and requires exhibitors somehow to get their flowers to last longer.

It has been an unhappy year for the Royal Horticultural Society, too, with the loss, during the pay review prompted by the recession, of some key staff. The president, Giles Coode-Adams, retires at the AGM in early July, surely with a sigh of relief. But the appointment of a new director-general is finally expected in Quartz Beads Cheap the next month, and quite late in the day M&G Investments have come forward to sponsor Chelsea.

Certainly, the show is likely to look less sparse than last year's. Then, there were only 14 rather than 22 large show gardens;

this year, the number is 15, with the Eden Project's garden by Paul Stone the largest ever seen at Chelsea. There are some welcome new names among the large show garden designers, including Clear Stocks Jonathan Denby, Philippa Pearson, Scott Wynd and Darren Saines; and among the sponsors, too, in L'Occitane, Brewin Dolphin and South Lakes Hotels. Strong architectural elements, such as dry stone walls, are back in vogue, and planting schemes will be a bit brighter this year.

As for the plants, look out for Cenolophium denudatum, a classy cow-parsley relative, which you will see in Tom Stuart-Smith's Laurent-Perrier garden, and probably elsewhere as well; and, everywhere, the recently introduced, hardy, summer-flowering Salvia nemerosa 'Caradonna', which has 75-cm tall deep-purple stems, violet-purple flowers and grey-green leaves. In the Great Pavilion, Hilliers is showing a new 'mock orange', with a particularly strong scent, called Philadelphus maculatus 'Sweet Clare', while David Austin Roses promises an impressively well-mannered new rose, 'England's Rose', with deep-pink flowers continuously f
